실화를 근거로 한 이 영화는 1967년 8월 27일부터 시작된다.
베트남 전쟁이 한참이던 때에 각지에서 젊은이들이 해병대로 지원해온다.
타이런 워싱턴(Tyrone Washington: 스탠 쇼 분), 빌리 레이 파이크(Billy Ray Pike: 앤드류 스티븐스 분), 엘빈 포스터(Alvin Foster: 제임스 캐닝 분), 비니 파지오(Vinnie Fazio: 마이클 렘벡 분), 데이브 비즈비(Dave Bisbee: 크레이그 왓슨 분) 등이 중심이 된 C중대는 2달동안의 훈련을 마치고 베트남의 다낭에 파견된다.
각자의 개성을 지니고 전쟁과 싸워나가는 동안 팀웍의 중요성을 깨닫게 되고 그러는중에 하나씩 전우들은 죽어가는 것이다.
베트남군과의 친목 도모를 위한 축구대회가 개최되는데 베트남군의 사기를 위해 그 경기에서 져주라고 요구한다.
이에 화가 난 C중대 병사들은 자신들의 명예를 걸고 열심히 시합에 임하여 그 시합에서 승리를 거두고 상관의 명령에 불복종한 이유로 최전방으로 가게 된다.
Disheartened by futile combat, appalled by the corruption of their South Vietnamese ally, and constantly endangered by the incompetence of their own company commander, the young men find a possible way out of the war.
They are told that if they purposely lose a soccer game against a South Vietnamese team, they can spend the rest of their tour playing exhibition games behind the lines.
